Sharpe on Podium in Morgan Debut

Sharpe on Podium in Morgan DebutAdam Sharpe's racing career just gets better and better! The Taunton teenager made his debut for legendary British sportscar manufacturer Morgan at the weekend, helping New Zealander Neil Cunningham take a vital second position at Oulton Park in his pursuit of the British GT Championship's Cup title.

Adam took the fact he was racing for a world-famous name, on such a historic circuit in front of the season's biggest crowd, all in his stride. Even the searing cockpit temperatures he had to cope with inside Morgan's 150mph Aero 8 racer as he guided it around the Cheshire circuit failed to deter the cool-headed youngster.

After an hour's racing, he and Neil had outpaced a field of cars from other prestige sportscar marques such as Porsche, Ferrari, Lotus and Marcos to finish second for the Richard Thorne Motorsport team that prepares the Morgan. They were beaten only by points leaders Patrick Pearce and Matthew Griffin's Porsche. Outstandingly, as well as finishing 2nd in the Cup Class, they also came in 5th overall - beating many full GT teams.

Adam said: "We knew that beating them would be tough - their car has undergone a massive development programme recently - but after a weekend of racing the Morgan I'm sure we can move up a gear - expect us to be much more of a threat to them at Rockingham.

"I was learning more and more about the Morgan with every lap and, with Neil 's experience rubbing off on me, I know where I can improve my own performances for the future."

And added 18-year-old Adam: "This is obviously a very exciting time in my career and it was terrific to see so many people taking an interest in the Morgan team at the weekend. It's a very special name and a privilege to be racing for it."

Morgan Motor Company's Managing Director Charles Morgan and veteran racer Cunningham were both hugely impressed by Oxford Brookes University Technology Management student Adam's performance.

"We are obviously delighted that Adam's first time out was such a scorching success. The result with Neil was excellent and it bodes very well for his future," said Charles Morgan.

Cunningham, who has over a decade's experience of racing at international level and lies third in the GT Cup class points table, said: "Adam did a very good job for such a young guy on his debut with a new team. He made a good start and kept with the leaders and when he handed over to me, lying 2nd in our class, at half distance the brakes and tyres on the car were still intact. He has a very smooth style and that is vital in preserving the car in endurance racing. He's got a big future in GT racing."

Adam's next race for Morgan in the British GT Championship will be on the classic Belgian Formula One Grand Prix circuit Spa-Francorchamps.
